Ride Report:
Malcolm Barske – Record Attempt: East to West Ireland
On Saturday 16th July 2022 at 06:02 am I started my ride from the east of Ireland to the west. I started at the end of the public access road directly below the Wicklow Head Lighthouse. The weather predicted was a warm day (24 Degrees Celsius) and the start was a nice cool 16 degrees. The wind on the day was predominantly blowing from the Southeast. The reason for this record was to raise funds and awareness for children born with Congenital Heart Defects which is something close to my heart because of my daughters’ history with this.
I used two bikes, a Cube C68:X with Shimano Ultegra Di2, Mavic Cosmic Carbon wheels and a Trek Speed Concept With a Zipp disk on the back and a Bontrager XXX 60mm front wheel and SRAM Red eTap groupset.
I used High-5 Energy juice, SIS gels, Banana bread and ham and cheese brioche buns to get me through the ride.
The ride itself was uneventful barring my Garmin bike mount snapping in half on the bumpy sections about 40km from the start. luckily, I had the Speed Concept TT bike as the bike to switch to if I was falling behind the planned average speed. I ended up riding the remaining 340km on the TT bike which helped the average speed for the day.
I would like to extend a special thanks to my friends John Coyle and Joseph Fitzgibbon for the support on the day, Craig Barske for officiating and my special ladies Lizette and Meghan for enduring all the time away from them to get this done.
Kind Regards,
Malcolm Barske
