12hr unsupported recumbent and 8 embedded
1/11/2026 start at 10:00 AM
Phoenix, AZ on the Lakewood Parkway Loop CW
I was attempting this record as part of my Cruzbike training for upcoming ultra rides/races this 2026 season. Sebring is my next event and I’m getting more and more excited the closer we get.
This was a very windy day. The loop includes a school zone that is active the whole school day, so the weekend is the only real option, unless you want to ride over night. I considered this but wanted it to be less impactful on my family. So, Sunday was my best choice. It just happened to be the windiest day with parts of the day 15mph sustained and gusts over 20mph.
This was very fatiguing and made speeds highly variable and overall slower than normal. On top of this stressor, as part of the unsupported method, we had done the 1hr pre-ride the day before but failed to video it. So, at 9:30pm the night before we did the pre-ride again.
With the extra riding and disruption to sleep, my legs were DEAD from the start. This was one of my lowest producing power rides in a long time and it was a battle to keep going for most of the day.
However, there was a large benefit from training in the wind and reminder that I can do hard things even when I don’t want to.
This ride had an updated position, the use of a TT helmet, and overall better equipment setups. I was fueled with Formula 369 at 140g/hr of carb.
The best part was persevering, and the worst part was the overall fatigue to my body, mind, and soul. But, looking back I remember the good and the hard fades. Remember that.
I finished with a couple extra laps to make sure I got to 500km, as I had to ride past 12 hours for this edition of the attempt.
My plan is to do 12 hours this year at elevation to go further, we shall see how the year unfolds!
