Congratulations to Doug Chivington for setting a new Cross State record for his Michigan W-E ride in these categories: Solo, officiated, 60-69 age group, upright bike, non fixed gear.

Record Attempt:
Michigan West to East, 60-69 Age Group
Name of Rider:
Doug Chivington
Start Date and Start Time:
Saturday September 6th, 2025 at 5:13am
Exact Location:
Bronson Park, Muskegon Michigan. (Note, the park name has changed to Kruse Park but a Bronson Park sign still exists at the entrance)
What were the conditions like?
Weather was cool at the start (52 degrees) and only reached 60 degrees at the end. Had a favorable SW wind for most of the day. Great riding conditions
Why did you want to do a record?
This point to point was attractive due to it was close to home (I live in Ohio) and fairly easy navigation with very few turns. I could manage this effort with a small crew and support.
What equipment did you use?
I rode a Speigel Diablo that is set up super simple. The drive train is 1×10 SRAM Force on Reynolds Rims with Continental 5000 tires. Vision Aerobars and a very comfortable Infinity seat
What did you eat and drink?
My go to hydration is a Tri Fuel mix, Torq bars, the occasional Coke and assortment of simple food options based on personal preference throughout the day.
What was the best part?
As I kept riding, I was feeling better and better. The first 2 hours, it was dark and had some construction zones to navigate. I was feeling a bit sluggish, but once the daylight hit, I settled down and felt in control the whole way to the end.
What was the hardest part?
We had 5 road construction areas we had to navigate (including a bridge out). It certainly was not a show stopper but did impact my pace and overall time to some degree.
Did anything unusual happen?
Nine miles from the finish in the last construction zone, a bridge was out and the detour suggested were on secondary roads that was dirt and gravel, not ideal for a road bike. I found this out on a recon trip about a month prior to the event. During the recon trip, I explained to one of the construction guys what I was going to attempt and ask if he had any suggestions on how to navigate the construction zone. He said “just take the foot bridge”, so I did. On race day in my bike shoes, I threw my bike on my shoulder, went down the embankment, crossed the footbridge and climbed out of the creek bank. From there I had a 100-yard jog across grass back to the road!
Exact finish location:
Port Sanilac Harbor.
