The weather on the day really turned out in my favor. The morning chill burned off quickly and the day matured into near ideal conditions. Clear all day. One of those days you dream about.
This has been a dream come to life. For years I have been riding with the local club from Seattle to Portland in their annual event, I often wondered who was the fastest? Not in a group, but solo. Who has the record. I set my sights on the goal of being the record holder.
Over the years building up to this, I have built a fleet of ultra distance bikes. For this attempt I brought 3 Spiegel’s. A San Marino road bike, a Diablo TT bike and a second San Marino but disk brake and set up as a time trial bike. All the bikes were set up with Wheel Science wheels and running tubeless tires.
Fueling was handled through 90% liquid, 10% solid. Gu roctane and Bonkbreaker solid foods. The combination and a small meal about halfway kept me charged all day and my energy flow even.
It was one of those rides that starts off so bad that you have to honestly question continuing. Not 5 minuets into the ride we hit unexpected construction that completely blocked forward progress on the route we had planned. After me and my support formulated a work around we managed to only add 2 miles to the overall route. That lead into some choppy going for a little bit but by the end of the first hour we were on a roll and crusing. It was smooth riding for many hours from here. until at the hardest point in the whole route my bib shorts began to come apart. Getting past the rolling hills and down to the Lewis and Clark bridge marked 50 miles to go and what I will remember as the most hellariously fast section of roadway I have ever riden. I made up so much time on the run into Portland, just to lose it all back with a overflowing event blocking streets and forcing about 2 more miles to get around to the sign.
Then finally after so much traffic at 5:50pm, at 70 NW Couch St, Portland, OR 97209. I had arrived. 12 hours 30 min non stop clock.
