Caleb Cline – Zwift attempt narrative

This ride has been planned for quite sometime and the reasons I did it were two fold. First, after almost 12 months of working with Zwift to launch an accurate Recumbent Trike I wanted to put on a show for those who believed in the idea and worked so hard to make a 7 year dream for me and for others much longer a reality. Secondly, Honor the Fallen brothers and sisters we have on my fallen flag that has gone with me and my team the Rusty Dogs of War to every event since I started ultra cycling in 2019. That flag is almost out of space on the white stripes, but despite the loss, we continue to grow stronger together!

While I personally felt let down for several days after the event because it didn’t go according to “my plan” I have accepted the fact that the mission was never about me and my ego and I chose not to quit even when everything around me seemed to be spinning out of control. About 3 hours into the event, my stomach violently erupted with what some coined as me “calling a dinosaur. As my wife so lovingly found the next day, I not only lost the entire contents of my Infinit Race Fuel that I had drunk in 3 hours, I also had parts of the previous night’s dinner in the pile that I had attempted to clean up post eruption.

At that specific moment, I was within a couple minutes of grabbing a smaller gear and starting to pick up the pace and that’s when it all “fell apart.”  I want to shout out my teammates who kept me going by riding with me virtually and kept me in good spirits, Greg Quarles, Brian Milton, and Marc Woodard. I also got lots of messages from friends and supporters pre, during, and after the event and while it may seem trivial to most, when you’re deep in the pain cave questioning life decisions, those little things keep you moving, even if it’s not as fast as you would have liked.
