Finish location: Flyvestation Værløse, Denmark. In front of the two big Hercules Hangar no. 46.
Conditions:
14 degrees Celsius and 5-6 m/s winds from west from the start. Temperature gradually increased to 20 degrees Celsius arond 4:00PM but so did the rain. During hour 4 to 8 only light rain but brutal conditions during the evening, night and morning with two cloudbusts, lightning and periods with increasing gust up to 11-12 m/s. The harsh conditions took a tool on equipment with 5 punctures and a front light which drowned during the night as well as flooding on the main runway during the night making visibility poor.
Why did you want to do a record?
During many years my wife (Caroline) and I have been competing in ultra races around the world and seen that we are quite competitive among the strong riders out there. After both achieving the longest distance by any Dane in 24h non-draft races (801,08km and 710,48km) it only felt natural to go for an official attempt to officially claim the national records in the Outdoor Track category.
What equipment did you use?
I used my TT bike (Pinarello Bolide F TT) with Scope Cycling wheels and CeramicSpeed-upgraded Shimano components. Duo to weather and the crazy number of punctures I used a series of different wheels and tires.
What did you drink and eat?
We had made a very clear nutrition plan in advance with the option of adjusting carbs, fluids and salt intake to the race conditions.
What was the best part?
Standing on the track after the attempt together with my wife, all the crew, officials, helpers and spectators in pouring rain. It had stopped raining around hour 20 and almost like a symbol for the whole attempt where the conditions simply had been against us the sky opened on the last lap.
What was the hardest part?
Accepting that I can’t control the weather and that the conditions of the day turned out so bad. It sure cost me actually showing my best performance. So much work goes into setting up such an attempt and it just feels like unfinished business when something out of your hands is affecting the attempt so much. I am proud that we kept fighting though.
Did anything particularly unusual happen?
Everything went as expected except from the weather which was a huge challenge and caused a lot of trouble during the event with wind and cloudbursts.
