Conditions:
14 degrees Celsius and 5-6 m/s winds from west from the start. A bit cold for a Danish summer morning. Temperature gradually increased to 20 degrees Celsius around 4:00PM but so did the rain, and it never felt like 20 degress Celcius. During hour 4 to 8 only light rain but brutal conditions during the evening and night with first a heavy rain and later on a cloudbust and periods with increasing gust up to 11-12 m/s. After the cloudbust the rain stopped for some hours, but the road was still wet and with it came the punctures. In the morning another cloudbust came just before the finish. The harsh conditions took a tool on equipment with 4 punctures and a flooding on the main runway during the night making visibility very poor. Furthermore it took two full changes of clothes which cost a lot of time. The pacing plan had to be rethought a couple of times, as the weather turned out so bad.
Why did you want to do a record?
During many years my husband (Mads) and I have been competing in ultra races around the world and seen that we are quite competitive among the strong riders out there. My longest distance so far was 710 km, and with a win at the 24h European Championships, second and third at the 24h World Championchips in Borrego, I felt like trying to beat the female world record on 24h short track. I knew it would not be easy and I had to step up to my very best, but I was eager to try.
What equipment did you use?
I used my TT bike (Pinarello Bolide F TT) with Scope Cycling wheels and CeramicSpeed-upgraded Shimano components. Duo to weather and the crazy number of punctures I used a series of different wheels and tires.
What did you drink and eat?
We had made a very clear nutrition plan in advance with the option of adjusting carbs, fluids and salt intake to the race conditions. My nutrition plan included energy snack bars, energy chews, gels, bread and bananas.
What was the best part?
Standing on the track after the attempt together with my husband, all the crew, officials, helpers and spectators in pouring rain. It had stopped raining around hour 20 and almost like a symbol for the whole attempt where the conditions simply had been against us the sky opened on the last lap.
Making it to the finish line together with the team around me, was absolutely the best part. My team had been fighting all night to keep me going even in the rain.
What was the hardest part?
Not to make it to the World record and to accept that I can’t control the weather and that the conditions of the day turned out so bad. So much work goes into setting up our attempt and it just feels like unfinished business when something out of your hands is affecting the attempt so much. I am proud that we kept fighting all the way to the finish line and that we came so close to the record.
Did anything particularly unusual happen?
Everything went as expected except from the weather which was a huge challenge and caused a lot of trouble during the event with flooding, cloudbursts, gust and lightning.
