Riders Narrative:

Records:

  • 100, 200, and 300km
  • 100 and 200mi
  •  6hr

Rider: Matthew Lefthand

Start: 7/29/2026 @ 2:54am MT

Location: San Luis Valley HWY 17 route (southern end start)

Conditions:

  • The original plan was to start at 12am but we pushed back to around 3am because of rain and wind.
  • The first half was low wind but also had the lowest temperatures, which slowed down the air and road.
  • The second half was warmer as the sun was up, but the winds became stronger and cross.
  • There was virtually no traffic overnight but early morning there was some traffic.

Purpose:

  • I have been training for ultra racing and record setting the past two years and these records have been a big goal since I started.
  • This was also more testing and learning for taking on the longer records up to 24 hours in the future.
  • I want to continue to show what is possible when you push your limits.

Equipment:

  • Ventum Tempus TT bike
  • ENVE SES pro disc rear and 100mm front
  • Vittoria Corsa Pro Speed wide 29mm
  • Formula 369 @ 200g/hr
  • Rudy Project Wingdream
  • IGPSPORT computer, light, and radar
  • Infinity Air TT seat
  • Velovaere chamois cream
  • Intake Breathing
  • Beetroot Pro
  • Vandoit support vehicle
  • Bolt shaving razor
  • Hyperthreads TT suit
  • Velotoze shoe covers and aero pro socks
  • Rule 28 underlayer
  • 3D print rear bottle carrier by Kevin Liberacki
  • Silca wax and sealant
  • Altitude tent for training

The best part:

  • This was a massive achievement both in stature and personal meaning. Last year, in April when I completed virtual world records, I knew this translated to real outdoor speed and I have been waiting for a chance to put it to the test in the most opportune conditions. I am starting to put it all together and excited for how far I can take these records.
  • One of my favorite parts is always the amazing support I have from family, friends, and brands. I am grateful to have great relationships, I could not do it without them, especially my wife Bailey.

The hardest part:

  • I was unsure of the overnight weather because I did another attempt here last month and it was too cold overnight. I was worried for a similar situation so I wore a base layer and it was one I thought I had tested before many times, but it ended up causing chafing issues the whole time. I couldn’t get truly comfortable on my seat, so I ended up just letting it happen (chafing) and also putting more weight on my shoulders. This was a truly crappy part of the ride, but there was nothing I could do about it so I made the best of what I had to work with.

Unusual:

  • I was using some new bottles that I had tested and had good success with earlier in the week but what I did not account for was that some of them were never used and the mouthpiece was difficult to open. Difficult enough that on two occasions when I did get enough pressure I completely removed the mouthpiece. Putting it back on at 28-30mph while in the tt bars was a challenging maneuver. I ended up having to put the bottle against my body to get enough pressure. One time I spilled some sticky carbs over me and the bike and had to use my plain water bottle to clean myself off some.

Other reflections:

  • In order to get ready for the altitude I did sleep in an altitude tent for 10 days before coming to Colorado, I think this made a lot of difference as the course is 3,30fft above my already high elevation living of 4,400ft in Utah.
  • I plan to use this course for longer records including the 24hr record at some point.
  • I am extremely grateful so many followed along and enjoyed being part of this journey.
  • I thought 30mph was a pipe dream, to be honest. I put it as the “A” goal knowing that most things would have to go right. I have had three “A” goal successes that I can remember in ultra cycling and this is that third rare success. I’ll keep working for some more, if I am so lucky.
