WUCA: Record Attempt. Riders Narrative Summary
These record attempts by Michael Kenny (US), were of the 100 mile and 6-Hour Road records in the 60-69 category. The current records are held by Russell Mason (US), 100 Miles: 04:12:32 in 2022, and Peter Scherrer (GER), 6-Hour: 136.65 Miles in 2020.
The record(s) attempt was on February 11, 2026 at Sebring, FL. The site of the annual Bike Sebring Ultra Cycling event. The record(s) attempt began at 7:29 at a temperature of 53F. The start and finish were Echo Park on the Duane Palmer Loop, a fast and smooth 3.66-mile loop.
I attempted these records in part to test myself and in part to experience the process of registering and attempting a WUCA record. I had heard that Bike Sebring was a fast course and I was planning to compete there. Attempting the record(s) a few days in advance of the Bike Sebring event made logistical sense as I was traveling from San Francisco. Once Larry Oslund offered to be the official for the attempt and suggested I could do it I was all in.
Conditions were excellent on the morning of February 11, cool with no wind. But that would change within an hour as the wind somewhat unexpectantly picked up from the forecasted 5mph to about 15mph. While the route was a loop, the wind made it very difficult. There was about 1 mile of the loop that felt calm or fast and the rest of the loop was a battle either with a sidewind or headwind.
I rode a Factor Hanzo TT bike and Zipp wheels with a Zipp Super-9 rear disc wheel. I fueled on a maltodextrin fructose mix of of about 100g/hour.
The best part was knowing Larry and my son Eamonn who was my crew, were in the car behind me, and sharing their elation for me at the completion was a special moment.
At one point a gaggle of geese began to cross the road in front of me, but quick thinking by Larry and Eamonn saved me and the geese, as they accelerated the car ahead of me and the geese speed across the road.
As I approached the finish what I thought was my last loop I did not see Larry at the finish line and looked behind me to see him and Eamonn still in the follow car. I then realized I had one more loop to go as the last loop is prorated and I must have been at about 5:59. Needless to say, the last loop was hard.
The hardest part was certainly battling the headwind and trying to make up for lost time on other sections of the route. My average speed fell to 23.9 mph at one point and had to battle hard over the next hour to get it back up to 24.1 mph.
The record(s) attempt was completed at about 13:30 pm setting a new 100-mile record of 04:09:58.58 and a new 6-Hour record of 144.004 miles. A long recovery ensued!
With thanks to Larry Oslund (Official) and Eamonn Kenny (Crew) and kudos to Russell Mason 100 Miles: 04:12:32 and Peter Scherrer 6-Hour: 136.65 Miles.
