What were the conditions like? With the location of the attempt at approximately 4,500 feet above sea level, it was not a complete surprise to wake up to 4 inches of snow on the track on the morning of the attempt. A group of officials cleared the outer three lanes of the track so that the attempt could begin less than three hours behind schedule. The temperature was generally cold throughout the ride (average temperature 36 degrees Fahrenheit), with swirling winds during the afternoon and an overnight low temperature of 26 degrees Fahrenheit. Weather conditions notwithstanding, the factor that had the single biggest impact on the attempt was the surface of the track. I knew well in advance of the attempt that rubber tires on the rubberized track surface would make for slow going. It wasn’t until the week before the attempt, however, when I got my first access to the track for a short test ride that I learned that riding on the spongy, “grippy” track surface might have an adverse effect on my body. A brief 21- mile ride produced throbbing legs and nighttime muscle (quadriceps) spasms. Although conservative riding and adequate nutrition during the attempt prevented any leg problems from occurring, such was not the case for my lower, middle, and upper back, which tightened after a mere 150 miles. From that point on (i.e., the final 13 hours or so of the attempt), I could only ride slowly for a short distance before having to stop to stretch and use the massage gun. In the end, the back issues presumably resulting from the strain of riding on the rubberized surface prompted me to abandon the attempt after completing only half of the intended distance.
Why did you want to do a record? Shortly after completing a 24-hour ride at Sebring in 2024, I was encouraged by Larry Oslund to make a record attempt on an ElliptiGO. With only a year of riding under my belt and lacking a background, putting together a record attempt seemed a daunting task. Nevertheless, Larry was persuasive, and I thought it might be nice to get ElliptiGO “on the board.” By learning how to take the steps required to make a record attempt, I hoped to acquire knowledge and skills that I could share with other ElliptiGO riders who might want to join the fun. After I rode nearly 300 miles in 24 hours at Sebring, completing 500 miles seemed to be an ambitious yet realistic target given a 14-week build and a substantially higher level of fitness than I had at Sebring.
What equipment did you use? Anything special? ElliptiGO 11R long-stride elliptical bike
What did you eat & drink? I drank water, Liquid IV, TriFuel, LMNT, and, during the cold overnight hours, hot coffee. I ate rice balls (sushi rice + rice vinegar) with teriyaki dipping sauce, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, Pringles, chicken noodle soup, and Dunkin Munchkins.
What was the best part? Unquestionably, the most gratifying part of the attempt was witnessing firsthand the event come off smoothly despite challenging environmental conditions. The logistical planning, organization, implementation, and execution by crew chief Judy Van Raalte was masterful. It was impressive and inspiring to see the disparate group of officials and crew members come together, perform the duties for which they had been trained, and work tirelessly in support of the attempt.
What was the hardest part? Although portions of the attempt were painful and physically demanding, that comes with the territory in the sport of ultracycling. The hardest part of the attempt was coming to grips with the inescapable feeling that I had let the team of officials and crew members down and that I was the weakest link in an otherwise strong chain. That sense of disappointment, I hope, will steel my resolve to do better in future attempts (and, not surprisingly, put selection of a more appropriate track/route at the top of the list of priorities).
Did anything particularly unusual happen? Apart from my back’s rebellion against the riding surface, the only unusual occurrences I observed were a family making snow angels on the infield during the day, an unexpected (and, fortunately, uneventful) visit from the local police at 1:00 a.m., and a shooting star (Sedona is an International Dark Sky Community).
