Riders report 100 km indoor velodrome attempt 8 june 2028
I turn 60 this year. About two years ago I started planning for a potential UCI Hour Record attempt M 60. This has been quite a challenging project since we don’t even have a full size velodrome in Sweden. I got great help from Aeroedge and Bernardo Goncalves in planning and arranging at the National Velodrome in Portugal Sangalhos. It’s a very nice, fast and smooth track, but still at sealevel which gives more aerodynamic resistance than riding at altitude where most indoor Velodrome records are set. When planning for this I came up with the idea to also try for a 100 k record WUCA / GUINNESS a few days later. Since I already have WUCA / GUINNESS records for 100 k both on Outdoor Road category from October 2022 with 2 h 10 min and in the Outdoor Track category with 2 h 14 min from July 2021, I saw a very tempting opportunity to try to hold the 100 k records for all three categories.
On the 4 th June I did my Hour Record attempt and I was extremely satisfied with breaking the former M 60 record with 800 m and reaching 48 947 m. So after a few restdays and some bike tuning, I changed cockpit extension angle to 30 degrees and changed gear to 63/14 from Hour Record 20 degrees extension and 63/15 gear before my attempt on the 8 June. After my successful Hour Record ride and some training in between I had good hopes and set the target for pacing at 18.6 s per lap and going + 48 kph for the full attempt. The existing overall age group record for 100 k fixed gear bike was a bit over 2 h 10 minutes and with a standard TT bike it was above 2 h 9 minutes. So my ambition was a 3-5 minutes faster then these and of course an extreme challenge for me as an “oldboy”.
I set off in good mood and after a very tough first lap to get the 63/14 gearing rolling. Then I came up fast to speed and started clocking laps around 18.3. Bernardo coached from the side and we also had a radio so I heard a lot of slow down the first 20 minutes going well over current records as planned but also faster than planned pace. But I felt I had this ride under control and I made sure to get my pulse stable and not go over 151 where I found my sweet spot for even pacing. I did more or less 18.3-18.5 laps the first full hour and passing this mark with approx 48 350 meter ridden just felt great. I had just broken the old Hour Record for m 60 again and now hopefully with enough power for another hour near this pace.
I rode with a 1.5 l Camelbak with sportsdrink in the front under my TT suit. Made sure to drink often and after 1 h 15 minutes I still felt reasonably good and strong and tried to increase cadence a bit. But somehow I just wasn’t able to, the accumulated forces and stress from this very challenging environment with all 400 laps and 800 “curves” with 40 degree banks adds up, I can tell you. So I had to remain focused as good as I could and just try to hold the black line. My average speed for the full attempt started to drop a bit and after 1 h 45 minutes I was at 48.2 kph average. Now fighting hard to keep pace under 19 s. I still managed to keep a positive mind but the last 15-20 k were extremely hard since I couldn’t get any more fluid from my Camelbak. Somehow the hose had created a stop or a vacuum so I had to ride last 20 minutes without this highly wanted and at this time needed energy. Still tough, I had great spirit and felt I can make this all the way. When av. speed was down to 48.1 I got very inspired and determined to keep it at this level so I really digged deep the last 10 minutes and with a last push at 99% of maxpulse for the last 10 laps I finally reached nr 400. The feeling doing so was incredible and even more so after a few slowing down laps. Yes I made it and managed to fulfil this crazy dream of breaking world records in the Velodrome. 2 years ago I hadn’t even tried riding in a Velodrome and the first time I did it I was completely exhausted after just 16 laps and 4 k. Now I had just completed 400 laps with the time 2.04.48 with 48.1 kph 29.89 mph. So pleased to achieve this and in some way prove that it’s possible to push boundaries at this age. It’s never too late!
