I started outside for 21 miles, got cold and soaking wet, and finished inside. After being off the bike and sidelined for 9 days between a sinus infection and crappy weather, I was determined to get a century ride this week. The forecast called for drizzle and very little rain during the day. I dressed myself in my best water-resistant kit and hoped for the best. About 30 minutes into the ride, I quickly began to realize my 100-mile outside ride hopes were getting dim. 40 minutes into my ride, there was a huge oil slick that lasted for about a mile on Hop City road. I remember seeing something about it during the week on Facebook, but I completely forgot about it. And once I rode into it, you pretty much had to ride out of it again anyway. After my first loop on Hop City, which was about 17 miles in, I realized I was starting to get really wet and a bit hypothermic, so I decided to call it and rode home. 4 miles later, I could barely get off the bike and get into the house so I could strip down and get into the hot shower and try to get my body temperature back up again. After that, I decided I would convert my time trial bike to the trainer. Of course, nothing had been set up, and I haven’t used my trainer in a very long time, maybe even two years. So, the last 79 miles were indoors. The only miles I’ve done this year that we’re not outside. I guess I’m pretty fortunate to have rode so many miles and not had to do them inside this far anyway. Sometimes, you just have to throw in the towel and do what’s best because it’s not worth the risk at the end of the day.
