Congratulations to Marek Rupinski for setting the WUCA record for his ride from Szczecin, Poland to Lisbon, Portugal during Oct 21-30, 2024 in the Male, 18-49 age-group on an upright bike.

The Route
The cycle route from Szczecin to Lisbon through Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Spain is an amazing journey that leads through beautiful landscapes and diverse cultures of Europe.

The route is over 3000 km long. The route leads through roads and cycle paths of European countries, where the cycling infrastructure is well developed 

Germany – Netherlands

The route leads us west towards the Netherlands, where we enter Venlo and then head towards the border with Belgium. In the Netherlands we will meet an extensive network of cycle routes that are safe and comfortable for cyclists, as well as charming towns and rural landscapes. 

Netherlands – Belgium

 The route through Belgium leads through hilly areas, Belgium offers well-prepared cycle routes, and riding through forest areas and nature reserves is a pleasant diversion. Belgium – France The route leads through Paris, where it is worth admiring the charms of this city. In addition, charming rural villages and towns

France – Spain

 After Paris we head southwest, towards Bordeaux. I reach the Bay of Biscay, and then cross the Spanish border, where we get to San Sebastian. 

Spain – Portugal

 Basque Country, Castile and Leon, Extremadura very beautiful landscapes and a huge culture of drivers,

Portugal

 Mountainous areas inland, all the way to Lisbon. 

The route from Szczecin to Lisbon is a unique adventure – full of views, experiences and cultural discoveries

*What were condition like?
The conditions were variable, autumn in Europe means weather from about 5 degrees Celsius to 22 degrees in Spain and Portugal during the day. During the test, rain accompanied me for about 4 days. In some areas, especially in Germany and Holland, I had a west wind which made driving difficult. However, in Spain and Portugal the weather improved significantly

*Why did you want to do record?
It’s an amazing route, besides I want to win the overall standings of the entire WUCA World Cup

*What equipment did you use
I used two bikes
Trek Madone SLR 7
Trek Domane SL 6
(unfortunately, after an accident in Belgium, the Trek Madone was damaged)

*What did you eat  and drink
During these types of events I usually eat pasta, rice, chicken, tuna and electrolyte supplements, i.e. minerals and vitamins

*What was the best part?
Spain and Portugal

*What was the hardest part?
France – due to bad weather, wind, cold and rain

* did anything particularly unusual happend?
an accident in Belgium caused by a woman leaving a side road. As a result of this accident my bike was damaged, I was personally bruised and with a slight injury I decided to continue riding
