Doug Chivington

Outdoor Track 300K, 300 mile and 500k

60-69 Age Group

Exact Location:

Carrier Park Mellow Drome Asheville NC

What were the conditions like?

Conditions were 55 degrees as we started at 8:00a and in the afternoon reached 80 degrees with low humidity.  Winds started coming from the North West at 10 MPH from 11:00a to 6:00p.   It cooled off again around midnight to the mid 50’s requiring some additional layers.

Why did you want to do a record?

After two successful shorter records on the Major Taylor Velodrome in Indiana (April of 2021) our team decided to attempt 3 more records while we were fit for outdoor track events.  All of our sponsorships lined up nicely and it was natural to keep going for more Velodrome rides.

Team Chivington also uses events as fund raisers and we used this event to support a nonprofit organization called the “USA Warriors Ice Hockey Program” that focuses on veterans PTSD and TBI recovery. This program provides a venue for adaptive sports and we raised over $1600 for our veterans.

What equipment did you use?

I rode a Raleigh Professional Steel frame with Vision aero wheels, Campy equipped components and Edge Cycling Technologies saddle.   Utilized a Wahoo Element as my on board bike computer but it was not the official record device.

What did you eat and drink?

Was mainly a liquid diet.  I drank Tri Fuel, Ensure, gels with an occasional Coke thrown in.

What was the best part?

Marc Poland (one of our team members) was an awesome resource for the attempt and effort.     Marc is local to the area, helped us navigate the Asheville venue while providing his personal resources and experience.   Also, helped level set the team and myself as we spent 20 hours on the bike.      He was a nice resource to just chat with as I rode the event.

We had great support from the Asheville Parks and Recreation office.  We also had the Ohio RAAM Show with live streaming and reporting during the event.

We had support from local radio and television stations highlighting our fundraising efforts and record attempts.

As far as riding results, I improved my 300 mile time by 4 hours and 40 minutes and we met our total riding goal of 20 hours for 500K.

We had very little challenges and everyone worked well together for a nice result!

What was the worst part?

It was the wind condition and heat combination the later part of the afternoon which I expected.   I was ready for cooler temps, reduced wind and some night riding.

Did anything unusual happen?

While riding I hit a bee and it nailed me on my chest.   The bee sting pain lasted about an hour and fortunately did not have any serious reaction that I needed to stop for.
