Riders Narrative Summary

•Malin2Mizen2Malin Unsupported 1224km

•07/12/2024 Start time 7am

•Start Malinhead County Donegal Ireland,

most northern point in Ireland which has an old lookout tower at this point

•Conditions , starting out was fair , some heavy rain in the letterkenny area , wind was a 15kph N NW and variable, was not a favourable wind as expected but wasn’t really a hindrance, the Friday night got very cold at around 2am until 530am it was around 3 degrees Celsius, with some scattered showers ,

In county Cork and Mizenhead Saturday morning it was a beautiful sunny morning and a northern breeze around 10/15 kph wind , this stayed the same for 611km back to Malinhead but remained dry except and odd bit of drizzle

•Record

I always dreamed of holding a Record and following WUCA and seeing others achieve this inspired me to do so especially following Joe Barr over the years , there is also very limited Ultra Races in Ireland of this distance so I suppose attempting a Record instead of just riding the distance gives more purpose

•Equipment

Bike Canyon Endurace, shimano ultegra di2, wheels Hunt 4 season son delux dynamo, 3 X apidura racing packs

I found the dynamo set up for charging phone during the day and running exposure revo light at night a great experience and confidence

•Food and Drinks

I mainly eat Torq Fitness bars and some snickers, haribo sweets , croissants and some pringles, at main food stops I stuck with Ham and Pineapple Pizza,

Drinks was mostly water with some electrolyte and lucozade sport which I diluted 50/50 with water , had a can of coke also with pizza

•Best part

I suppose when you get the feeling that things is falling into place and you get the feeling that you know your going to succeed early in and also I stopped with 3 ladies who had broken down on the road side and offered help to them , I couldn’t help in the end but I felt good into my final 500km that I tried to help

•Worst part

I had a rough 2 hours fighting sleep deprivation on night 0ne , it was really bad and I was trying to stay moving and be safe , this was my 1st distance of this type doing unsupported , its alot easier management when you have a crew with you who can give a coffee or chat for a few minutes to keep you going

•Anything Unusual

Yes I actually had some hallucinations,

Thus was night 2 where I only had a tough 40 min to an hour battling sleep deprivation, but the hedges had like cartoon characters in them , they were like green smurffs, I’ve never experienced thus before and I’m well use to sleep deprivation situations

•Finish

Malinhead Co Donegal most northern point in Ireland, with an old lookout tower, with a white line on the ground with Start and finish on it
