I decided to attempt the solo female 24 hour world record because I had already surpassed the
record distance of 439.65 miles when I rode 456 miles at the 6-12-24 Hour World Time Trial
Championships in 2018. I had been training to compete again in the WTTC in 2020. When it
was canceled due to the COVID pandemic, I decided to do my own 24 hour ride as a record
attempt. While I was only concerned with the 24 hour record, I added the other times and
distances to the record attempt with the assumption that I may break some of those in the
process.
A 10 mile course was chosen for the attempt, using roads around Borrego Springs which had
recently been resealed. The weather conditions on the date of the attempt were windy with
periods of rain. Gusts of up to almost 50 mph were recorded during the daytime. Temperatures
ranged from about 40-65 degrees Fahrenheit with periods of both sunshine and cloud cover.
A Trek Speed Concept (time trial) bike was the primary bike used for the 24 hours. I switched to
a Cannondale System Six aero road bike with aero bars for about 45 minutes while my crew
fixed a front flat.
My nutrition strategy was to consume approximately 200 calories per hour, primarily using
UCAN Energy + Protein powder, supplemented with boiled potatoes, beef jerky, and occasional
energy gels or bars. Due to the colder weather, I believe I was consuming a little more than the
planned 200 calories per hour which eventually led to some GI distress and heartburn. Also due
to the colder weather, I used primarily water for hydration, with about every other bottle
containing 1⁄2 a Hammer Fizz tablet for electrolytes.
The best part of the experience was having an amazing crew chief, coach, and support crew
who didn’t miss a beat throughout the ride and made it easy for me to simply focus on riding my
bike. Even better, it made me so happy to have everyone on the crew let me know how much
they enjoyed the experience.
The worst part of the experience was the unexpected and unfavorable weather conditions. My
crew and I executed our race plan almost perfectly, and under normal conditions should have
been able to break the 24 hour record. Unfortunately, the brutal winds affected my average
speed and caused undue fatigue so that I came up just a little short of the mark.
