Candidacy Statement from Paul Carpenter

Dear UMCA Members,

It is an honor and a privilege to be on the ballot for a position on the UMCA Board of Directors. I am interested in serving the organization and its members for two reasons. First, I believe I have an obligation to contribute to an organization that has provided me the opportunity to engage in something I enjoy. I believe I have a responsibility to give back to ensure others have such opportunities. Second, I feel that the organization is at an important crossroad in its development. It is clear from a number of forums that the membership wishes to see change. I believe I have the skills and experience to make a valuable contribution to the development of the organization and addressing the issues it faces.

I have had the pleasure of meeting many of you through my participation in the Ultra Cycling Cup and in many UMCA sponsored events. I have been a contributor to Ultra Cycling magazine writing articles on the Psychology of Ultra Cycling, an Insider’s Guide to the Texas Time Trials, and a report of the inaugural Race Across the West. I have officiated four world records and one cross-state record and I am an active participant on Google Groups. As an active member of the UMCA, I am familiar with the issues it faces and am aware of many of the concerns held by members.

If elected to the Board of Directors I would strive to address what I see as four key issues. First, ensure adequate processes are in place to allow members to have their voices heard. Second, to improve the transparency of how the organization operates in terms of fiscal accountability and the decision making processes related to the organization’s committees and programs. Third, establish clear lines of communication to ensure that members are connected to the Board of Directors and its various committees and the decisions those groups make. Fourth, to explore ways to increase the number of members actively involved in the UMCA’s governance.

I believe I have the skills and experience to move the organization forward. I have a wealth of management, fiscal, personnel, and governance experience through my professional work as the Department Chair for Kinesiology and Physical Education at Northern Illinois University. I am responsible for all facets of running the department which has 35 full-time faculty and staff, 1000 students, and an annual operating budget of nearly $3m. I am familiar with the management and governance issues of a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization having served as Board member for the Celtics Sports Foundation, a similar organization with a mission focused on promoting adult soccer. Thank you for your consideration.
